HRH BIg Cheese Cake Company

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose a cake made of cheese?

It is a great alternative - no cake is ever the same; your cake can be unique and offer your guests an exciting change from the traditional fruit and marzipan cake, or even make a great addition. These cheese cakes are ‘out of the ordinary’ and customised for your occasion.

If you decide to have a cheese cake as well as a traditional cake for you wedding day, you can ask the venue to serve the cheese cake as the cheese board and use the rest for a following day party.

How much cheese do I need?

We normally recommend 100g per person, so in theory if you have 80 guests you need an 8kg cake; 100 guests a 10kg cake and so on. However, a corporate event may require less than a 100g per person if a large buffet is being provided, or at a wedding, offering a traditional cake as well.

How much will it cost?

We roughly work it out as £4.00 per head this includes the consultation, cheese, decoration, hire of cake stand, assembly of the cake at your venue and delivery*.

Our cheese cake prices start from as little as £310.

What cheeses can I use?

Cheeses are selected to provide an interesting contrast of colours, sizes, textures and milk types. We usually recommend a selection which includes some traditional favourites, as well as some more unusual ones. We can also tailor the cheese to personal favourites or, for example, to represent the different parts of the country that the bride and groom are from, or indeed the people for whom the event is being held. However, not every cheese is suitable for a tiered cheesecake so please contact us with any queries.

Do I have a choice of cake stand?

Yes, the cheese cakes are always presented on a stand or a board, and you can choose from our collection. Please note the stands and boards need to be returned, they are supplied on a loan basis.

We will supply you with a box and prepaid return postage, so all you have to do is post it back to us.

Can I keep the decorations?

Yes, the decorations belong to you once the cake has been delivered. The only decoration items you have to return are the cake separators and pillars, along with the cake stand/ board, in the prepaid postage box. If you do not wish to keep the decorations you can return these in the box as well.

What payment methods can I use?

Your payment will be handled by PayPal, a leading and secure payment service provider. All major credit and debit cards are accepted, including VISA, Mastercard, Solo, Electron, Maestro and Delta. If you wish to pay by cheque, this must be made payable to the HRH Big Cheese Cake Company and must be received two weeks prior to delivery as the cheque will need to be banked and cleared before we deliver the cake.

What about delivery?

We deliver all our cheese cakes personally and assemble at location. We deliver free within a 50 miles radius of the OX17 (Oxfordshire) postal code. Outside this 50 mile radius a charge of 40p per mile will be made. Once the cake had been delivered, it becomes the responsibility of the hosts. The serving of the cake is not within our remit.

How much deposit do I need to pay?

We require a minimum deposit of 25% of the cheese cake price. Final balance for the cheese cake must be settled two weeks prior to the event.

How do I store the cheese?

Cheese is a living product, so it needs to breathe; so put the cling wrap away. However, if this is the only thing to hand, make sure you leave the rind area free from wrapping so it can breathe sufficiently. The ideal storage temperature is 8 - 10c in a larder or cellar - preferably not the fridge! For most of us the fridge is the only option, so try keeping cheese in foil, wax, greaseproof paper, a damp linen cloth, or plastic boxes instead of wrapping in plastic. Hard cheese can be frozen for up to three months. Freezing does not usually affect the flavour, but tends to create a crumbly texture that can be difficult to cut successfully.

I'm having a cheese and wine party –
can I have a smaller cake, how much cheese should I budget for?

Yes, you can order whatever size cheese cake you want and we will decorate to your needs. Some people are greedy and love cheese, whereas others will eat just a little and drink all your wine! We normally recommend 100g per person; we can put together a selection of our favourites, creating a good cheese board, or you can choose, let us know your preference. Vary the types – hard cheese, soft cheese, a firm pressed cheese, a blue cheese, a goats' cheese etc. A good selection is best; think about colour, strength and texture. For example, a flavoursome Shropshire Blue adds glorious colour and is a good choice instead of a stilton. A Cornish Yarg always looks interesting and seems popular with everyone – quite scrumptious!

Are there cheeses suitable for Vegetarians?

Yes, there are many cheeses suitable for vegetarians because the rennet which starts the cheese making process uses a plant extract. Vegetarian cheeses do not taste any different to ones using animal rennet.

I'm pregnant, so which cheeses should I avoid?

If you are pregnant it is suggested by The Chief Medical Officer that you avoid soft and blue cheeses, whether pasteurised or unpasteurised.
